Artist Statement:
Escargot started as two car fenders welded together, 1940 Willys rears. From there, I added hand-formed sheet steel to form the rest of the shell. That work was done years ago, but didn’t display well just sitting on the floor. I added the fork in 2022 to complete the sculpture. The work premiered in Bemidji, MN, in 2024.
About Michael Pettit
Michael Pettit has been involved with public sculptures for 25 years since placing his first sculpture in the 1999 Bemidji Sculpture Walk. His work with custom cars took off soon after and he has only recently had time for public sculptures. He had three sculptures placed in 2023, five in 2024, and eight (to date) in 2025. Michael was awarded the People’s Choice Award in the 2024 Delano Sculpture Walk.
