Artist Statement:
Inspired by the incredible migration of the monarch butterfly, Peter wanted to honor them in the structure of a Russian doll. However, when Putin invaded Ukraine, he switched the doll to the Ukrainian version. Note the sunflowers, the traditional embroidery of Ukraine and more.
About Peter Vogelaar
Peter Vogelaar graduated from Kootenay School of the Arts in 1976, majoring in sculpture and printmaking. Then he spent a number of years running his own sign business. In the early 1990s he began creating snow sculptures, then ice and sand. These art forms have taken him to eighteen countries and earned him many awards, including 1st In Snow at the 2006 Torino Olympics and two world championships. In recent years, Peter’s sculptures have won the People’s Choice award at a number of sculpture walks.
